Recent Developments in Forensic Disability Practice in Australia

Abstract:

People with disability are overrepresented in the Australian criminal justice system and can be considered a severely disadvantaged subpopulation compared to already marginalised correctional and forensic populations. Despite the importance of addressing the needs of this group, there is a paucity of research on the intersection of disability and correctional services (Doyle et al., 2022). Furthermore, there is limited research on

describing the specific models of care (Duff et al., 2023). There is limited effort and scarce resources available to develop services, support, and evidence-based interventions for this marginalised group.

Forensic disability is a subspecialty that requires greater attention and resources, given that this is largely underdeveloped and underserved. This symposium will present papers focusing on recent developments in forensic disability practice in Australia. It is envisaged that current research and practice developments will help improve service provision and the lives of people with disability who come into contact with the criminal justice system.
