Recovered and False Memories in the Context of Legal Cases: Preventing Ruination, Wrongful Convictions, and Unwarranted Family Estrangments

Dr Lawrence Patihis, PhD, CPsychol

Department of Psychology

University of Portsmouth

In this keynote speech, Dr Patihis uses a combination of past empirical research on memory to detail the nuances of how memory works. This includes memory distortion research, general memory research, and childhood amnesia research. He also will discuss real past legal cases that are precedents cautioning about what can happen, how better to deal with such cases, as well as adding to the converging evidence about the possibility of false memories in the real world.
